A couple of things before the beach trip. We had a day of fun at the Southeastern Quilt and Textile Museum on 6/15. There was a special exhibit of Japanese quilts.
This is a small museum and the third time we’ve gone so we also decided to become members. We did the $100 membership and thought we were just supporting our Georgia museum but now we belong to a reciprocating group of many places. Good deal!
I took many photos to show a friend that wanted to go but had to care for a husband who broke his hip. He’s doing well but wasn’t ready to be on his own.
We tried to go to a different place for lunch, but we really like The Corner Cafe in Carrollton.
I had blueberries in the fridge that I didn’t want to waste so made blueberry muffins to take to the Friend’s meeting Sunday. These are simple, delicious and fast enough to make Sunday morning.
And then it was Monday and off I went to Tybee Island. The drive took longer than expected with traffic, construction, road closed at one point with cow pasture detour, but made it to the motel about 5:30.
The motel is cute! And had some pros and cons. When I booked I think there was only a studio room available. No problem, just me. The room was clean, bright, fridge, coffee maker and microwave, queen bed, palm wallpaper. No closets, a luggage rack, shelf, tv, good air conditioner. I was fine dressing out of the suitcase and had no problems with the room.
The bathroom was pretty much not big enough for one person. Seriously. The sink was tiny, the tiles behind it were about 5x5, the shower big with good water pressure, amenities were good - soap, shampoo, linens. But toilet use interesting. Maybe tmi, but seriously about 3 inches from the shower. I still really hadn’t figured best contortion after a week.
I was easily able to walk to the beach and just about a mile from the south end with shops and restaurants. I walked up the beach and then used sidewalks back to the hotel. I was mid island which was nice and quiet. I might use the motel again, but would not get the studio! My car didn’t move for two days.
I was exhausted when I got in Monday so Trader Joe’s popcorn for dinner. While walking on the beach Tuesday morning I asked a couple which way was busier and they pointed me to the pier in the distance, south end.
I needed breakfast, had not done much research so saw Wet Willie’s ( slightly fearful), saw people eating what looked like pretty good omelets and went in. This is a frozen daiquiri place and I was not up for that at 9:30 am. Many people seemed to be ready! I had a good breakfast burrito and straight orange juice.
Strolled back to the motel, hit the grocery store on the way (popcorn restock) small but well stocked. I relaxed, used the motel pool, many chairs are broken so beware. Dinner was at Pier 16 and excellent - oyster Rockefeller, crab cake and salad. And a glass of wine since I walked!
Wednesday morning I walked the trails at Oatland Island Wildlife Center. I went when it opened because it was hot on Tybee. I spent about 2 hours and it was wonderful. Spanish moss, marsh, animals, a few people but I was mostly on my own.
I hadn’t had breakfast first, I eat later in the day normally, so was hungry. The nice man in the gift shop said Flying Fish was good so I believed him. I had delicious fried flounder, onion rings and salad. Perfect lunch.
Back to motel to relax, pool and stay out of the broiling sun at its highest. The temps were in the 80s but it was very windy and while the breeze was wonderful, it would be easy to get totally fried.
I walked up the beach about 6, had ice cream for dinner and that was perfect. And also I drank a lot of my Trader Joe’s blood orange flavored seltzer water. Cold from my room tiny fridge.
Thursday morning I booked a dolphin cruise. I booked for 10:30, was slightly worried at the downpour while we were waiting to board. Okay, a couple downpours, but our first mate Eric stated “ dolphins like water”.
Once on board no rain. This isn’t a fancy tour. It is a wonderful, relaxing boat ride with excellent first mates with good information and enough but not too many corny jokes. There were probably 30 people of all ages on the boat. We did see dolphins. They are wild animals and the boat does not feed them to see them so completely random but we saw quite a few and even some babies. No pictures of dolphins, they don’t pose in the wild.
The cruise is about an hour, we did see some lighthouses, birds, buoys and other cruisers. I thoroughly enjoyed the trip. Picture is one of the boats used for tours.
Again no breakfast but saw a taco place on the way to dolphins. I had lunch there and it was very good. Guacamole (vegetable portion of meal), carnitas taco and an oyster taco. Again perfect.
My meals seemed to be early lunch, lots of rehydrating in the afternoon, the. Grazing dinners. Worked for me!
Back home Friday. I hope to leave fairly early and will stop at Middle Georgia State University in Cochran to pick up a friend’s child and deliver them home for the weekend.
I contacted my friend to see if her child needed anything or was interested in going home for the weekend. Random but I’d be passing by and it worked out. So I’ll have company on the ride home.
